Proper Measuring

(scroll down to bottom for thickness examples)

Measuring for a BOX or CONTAINER LINER using a GUSSETED BAG

Bag width (box or container side to side measurement) + 1”

Bag depth (box or container front to back measurement) + 1”

Bag length (box or container height + box depth) + 6” to cover contents and tie the bag closed

Measuring for a BOX or CONTAINER LINER using a LAYFLAT BAG

Bag width = container width + container depth + 2” for a looser fit

Bag length = container height + container depth+ 6” to cover contents and tie the bag closed

Measuring for a PALLET COVER using a GUSSETED BAG

Cover width = pallet width + 2” (longest of the two side to side measurements)

Cover depth = pallet depth + 1”

Cover length = pallet height + ½ of the pallet depth measurement (note: the length or "drop" includes 1/2 the depth at the bags seam)

Measuring for a ROUND CONTAINER using a LAYFLAT BAG

Container circumference = diameter x 3.14

Bag width = container circumference divided by 2 (plus add 1” for a looser fit)

Bag length = container length + container diameter + 5” for overhang

Measuring for a RE-CLOSABLE BAG

Measure length (L) from bottom of the bag to the base of the re-closable seal

Measure width (W) of the bag from side to side

For rigid items add 1/2” to the width (W) of the bag to allow the item to fit through the opening

For thick or bulky items adjust dimensions accordingly (add 1/2” to 2” to both dimensions for a looser fit)

Measuring for a SLIDER TOP BAG

Measure length (L) from the bottom of the bag to the bottom of the slider

Measure width (W) of the bag from side to side

For rigid items add 1.5” to the width (W) of the bag to allow the item to fit through the opening

For thick or bulky items adjust dimensions accordingly (add 1/2” to 2” to both dimensions for a looser fit)

Note – width is ALWAYS the largest side to side measurement – depth is ALWAYS the smallest side to side measurement

THICKNESS

Question:  What is mil?

Answer:  In reference to poly bags and film it refers to the “thickness” (see below)

              1 mil = 1/1000 of an inch
